HOW TO PLAY RUMMY
To understand how to play the game of Rummy, we must first understand the deck of Rummy. A deck comes in the form of a collection of cards; a rummy deck, on the other hand, comprises 52 cards that are further categorised into two categories: Rank and Suit.
Ranks
Ranks refer to the value of a card. Every card within the rummy deck is given a point value according to the following:
Ace, Jack, Queen, and King are high-value cards or face cards that contribute 10 points for each one. The other cards contribute according to their rank. That is, if a card has a rank of 3, it's worth 3 points.
Suits
Four suits of cards: Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, and Clubs. In each of the four suits, there are 13 cards of different ranks. Rummy is usually played with two decks that also contain printed Joker cards. The value of a Joker is zero.
HOW ARE POINTS CALCULATED IN RUMMY
Rummy is a strategic game in which players have to make sequences and sets to declare the hand before it can reach the opponents. A declaration is valid if it brings zero points and a win.
If the player makes an invalid declaration, they lose 80 points, and the game ends with a declared winner. In rummy rules, the maximum score a player can make in one game of Rummy is 80 points, and scores above this count as 80. For example, if your overall score is 85, then your score counts as 80.
Winning Points
Declare your hand: You either show two pure sequences (for example, 3 through 6 of clubs) or one pure sequence (for example, 7 through 10) and one impure sequence (for example, 2, 3, 4, Joker). If you have a valid hand, you win without losing any points.
Losing Points
When the winner is selected, the points of the hands of the opponents are summed up. For example, if you have a pure sequence and two unpaired cards of 10 and 5. Your score is purely that from the unpaired cards: 10 + 5 = 15.
Face cards include A, J, Q, and K, which count at 10 points, while the number cards count for their numeric values.
Drop
If you drop the game in the first round, you score 20 points. If you drop in the second or later rounds, the score will be 40 points. Dropping three consecutive turns automatically results in a penalty of 40 points.
You can practice using the Real Rummy app to understand this point system and master the game.
Rummy Game Rules for other variants
Rules vary between different versions. Remember them as you play on the Real Rummy app. Here are some standard versions and their rules.
13-Card Rummy
Here, each player receives 13 cards and must make sequences and sets. The winning of the game requires you to create two sequences. This includes one pure and one impure.
1. Points Rummy: The dealer deals 13 cards to every player and retains the rest in a stockpile. One can pick up either from the discard or the stockpile, and one has to discard one card. It wins with zero points, declaring the hand the first creating two sequences or a pure and an impure sequence.
2. Pool Rummy: Similar to points Rummy, but players score after every round they play. The game goes on till the overall scores of players reach 101 or 201, and players are dropped.
3. Deals Rummy: Every player is given a pre-decided number of chips and cards. After every round, the winner takes chips from the rest according to the scores. The one with the most chips at the end is the winner.
In this variant, each player receives 21 cards and has to form three pure sequences. Of course, it is also possible to win with groups of cards or certain combinations that involve jokers. More skill and strategy are required in this version.
ROLE OF JOKERS
Jokers are superb because they can substitute for any card that will complete a set or sequence. Using Jokers correctly can make all the difference in Rummy.
SETS AND SEQUENCES
Sets are three or more cards of the same value but from different suits, while sequences are three or more consecutively-ranked cards of the same suit.
Pure vs. Impure Sequences
Pure sequences have only natural cards; impure sequences have at least one Joker. Prerequisites for winning vary between versions; in 13-card Rummy, you must have at least one pure and one impure sequence.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR WINNING AT RUMMY GAMES
Understanding what variation you're playing is essential. Here are some tips and tricks:
Tips
- Aim for Pure Sequence Early: This will give you a better chance of declaring first.
- Make Usages of Joker Wisely: Since jokers also make sequences and sets, use them properly.
- Get Rid of High-Value Cards: Unless they are part of your sequence, such high-value cards are dangerous because if you don't get rid of them, they may leave you with plenty of negative points.
- Drop: If your hand is terrible, you may like to drop in the first round because the penalty is not that high compared to later rounds.
- Track discarded cards: Do not pick cards that have been seen discarded.
Tricks
- Watch the opponent's discard: Sometimes, this gives an idea to the opponent's hand.
- Mislead Others: Discard high cards so that the opponent gets a wrong notion about what you are looking for
- Keep middle cards: They are versatile and cost fewer points.
Practice and strategic playing can perfect your skills in Rummy, and enjoy it even more!
